How to paint rust and car body with spray can yourself

Spray painting a car is a great way to repair body damage like rust, scratches, and chips without spending money on a body shop. In this article, we'll explain in detail how to properly paint rust and other car parts so the result looks like it came from the factory.

1. How to paint rust on a car with a spray can

To remove rust and paint with a spray can, proceed as follows:

  1. Surface preparation: Remove all rust with a wire brush or sander. Sand the area down to bare metal.
  2. Cleaning the surface: Degrease the surface with silicone remover.
  3. Primer: Apply a rust-protective primer (epoxy). This prevents future rust.
  4. Painting: Spray the paint in several coats, allowing each coat to dry for 10-15 minutes. It's best to apply the paint from a distance of 20-30 cm to avoid drips and runs.
  5. Paint sealing: After painting (10-15 minutes after the last coat of paint), apply a clear coat for protection and shine.

2. Painting with color gradient (transition) from the spray can

If you only want to paint part of the body with a smooth transition, proceed as follows:

  1. Preparation: Clean, sand and degrease the surface to be painted.
  2. Applying paint: Start in the center of the area and spray the paint outward in a circular pattern. For a smooth transition, spray from a greater distance to spread the paint.
  3. Clear coat: After the paint has dried, apply the clear coat (10-15 minutes after the last coat of paint) to smooth the transition and create shine.

3. How to paint the entire body with a spray can

A complete painting of the body with a spray can is more complex, but doable if you follow all the steps:

  1. Prepare the body: Wash the car thoroughly, removing dirt, dust and old paint.
  2. Sanding: Sand the entire surface with a sander (last grit P800 dry to avoid scratches) to ensure the new paint adheres well.
  3. Primer: Use primer for bare metal, plastic, and filler. Epoxy primer is recommended for metal and filler, and a special plastic primer for plastic.
  4. Painting: Apply the paint evenly, starting in hard-to-reach areas (under bumpers, sills) and working your way toward exposed areas. Allow 10-15 minutes to dry between coats.
  5. Clear coat: Clear coat is applied 10-15 minutes after the last coat of paint.

4. Metallic paint with spray can

When applying metallic spray paint, it's important to maintain a distance of 20-25 cm from the surface. This ensures even coverage and prevents streaks. After the metallic coat has dried, apply a clear coat for a high gloss (10-15 minutes after the final coat).

5. How to paint with spray can at different temperatures

The optimal temperature for spray painting is between +18°C and +25°C. It's important that the surface is dry and not too cold. Too low temperatures slow drying, while too high temperatures can cause the paint to boil.

6. How long does the paint from the spray can dry on the car

Drying time depends on the paint type. Typically, the paint is touch-dry after 15-30 minutes, and complete drying takes 24 hours. When applying multiple coats, it's recommended to allow each coat to dry completely.

7. How long does the paint from the spray can dry on metal

The paint typically dries faster on metal than on plastic parts. It is recommended to wait 30-60 minutes for dust-dry paint to dry, and 24 hours for full drying.

By following these tips, you can give your car a high-quality paint job yourself, restore its appearance, and save money on repairs.
