Spray can painting – application technology
Preparatory work – washing, degreasing
First, the vehicle or the part to be painted should be thoroughly washed and dried.
Next, the surface to be painted must be degreased. White spirit is particularly suitable for this. After degreasing, the surface can be wiped with a lint-free cloth.
The entire surface to be painted should be inspected for scratches and chips—especially those that extend down to the metal. Any defects found should be filled. For minor damage, primer from a touch-up pen or spray can also be used. The primer dries within 30 minutes. Uneven areas are smoothed with P320–400 grit sandpaper. Adjacent surfaces are sanded with P1000–1200 grit sandpaper or treated with matting paste. This ensures an even finish and good adhesion of the car paint. After priming and sanding, the surfaces should be degreased again.
The second preparation step involves masking adjacent parts that are not to be painted. Special (painter's) tape, foil, etc. are suitable for this.
Painting with car paint from a spray can
The painting process with car paint from a spray can begins with vigorously shaking the can. The paint is applied at a temperature of approximately 20°C and not in high humidity. For color matching, the paint can be sprayed onto a piece of metal beforehand.
The car paint is applied in several (2-3) coats, with a drying time of 15 minutes between each coat. The first base coat should be applied very thinly from a distance of approximately 40 cm, with subsequent coats from a distance of 25-30 cm. After the final coat, the paint should dry for 24 hours.
If a basecoat was used, allow the final coat to dry for 20–25 minutes and then begin applying the clear coat. The car paint is applied in two coats, each with a drying time of 15 minutes.
