How to Spray Paint Rims: A Complete Guide
Painting car rims can be necessary for a variety of reasons: damage from curb contact, signs of wear after extended use, or the desire for a new color. If the rims aren't significantly damaged or rusty, it's sufficient to clean the surface, apply primer, and spray paint. However, if there is damage or corrosion, the preparation process will take longer.
Required materials and tools
- Car shampoo, safety goggles and gloves.
- Adhesive tape , sturdy paper or foil to protect other vehicle parts.
- Sandpaper (grain P120 and P800), wire brush for removing rust.
- Degreaser , rust converter in spray form, car filler.
- Primer and spray paint for rims.
Preparing the rims for painting
Remove the wheels from the car and thoroughly clean them of dirt, rust, and old paint. Use sandpaper or a wire brush to do this. If rust is present, treat the rims with a rust converter spray. Then carefully degrease the surface.

Apply the primer to the prepared surface using a spray can. The primer acts as a bonding agent between the metal and the paint, improving adhesion and the durability of the paint finish. Spray the primer in thin coats from a distance of approximately 25 cm, allowing 15–20 minutes drying time between coats.
Painting rims
For painting, use high-quality spray paint, applied in several thin coats. Each coat should be only slightly opaque to avoid sagging. The optimal drying time between coats is 15–20 minutes. Typically, 2–3 coats are sufficient for a perfect finish.
Additional tips
If you want to enhance the result by painting the rims in two colors, use two spray cans of each color. After painting, especially with metallic colors, it is recommended to apply a clear coat for protection.
For four rims, you'll need approximately 2–3 spray cans of paint. Choose the color by number or name, or use the online color finder for a precise color selection.
