Car painting – matt paint for cars
Matte vehicle paint options:
- Complete matte body painting (primer, matte paint, matte finish). Having it done at a body shop is very expensive, and even painting the car in a matte color is more difficult than painting it in a high-gloss finish.
- Adding a matte effect with matting additives to varnish or paint. This method is cheaper than purchasing matte varnish and car paint in aerosol or spray cans. The result may be good, but it will still fall short of a proper matte finish.
- Matte paint in aerosol cans (or for spray guns). Matte paints in cans are easy to handle if you want to paint the car yourself. Matte car paints in spray gun cans are cheaper, but you have to dilute them with solvent to the correct consistency.
- Matte car paint – the easiest and most cost-effective method. While the price of matte car paint in aerosol cans is higher than in cans, aerosols are the most convenient option for painting your car in a matte shade yourself.
- Covering the car with a matte film – this service is available at every body shop, but it's expensive. If you no longer like the matte look, the film can be easily removed to restore the car to its original condition.
In this article we will look at the third method – painting the car with matte car paint.
Matte car paint – how to choose it
Matte car paints do not contain particles that reflect light, so the surface painted with them has no shine.
You can buy matte car paint at any auto body shop. Matte car paints in spray cans are offered by all paint system manufacturers. It's best to choose a spray paint from the same brand you used to paint your car. This is due to the specific properties of the paint composition of different brands, so using the same brand of car paint and the same brand of car paint guarantees better, more durable, and longer-lasting body coverage.
Matte car paint in spray cans – Application
First step – surface preparation. Perform all the usual pre-painting preparations – washing, drying, masking off all areas that will not be painted – plastic details, windows, rims, wheels, etc.
Apply the necessary paint to the car.
Matte car paint can be applied immediately after the last coat of paint has dried. In this case, the color of the car won't change, but the desired effect will be achieved.
The car paint is applied in 2-3 coats, with a drying time of 15-20 minutes between coats. It's important to note that the matte finish cannot be polished, so you'll need a lot of patience to ensure the coating is even and drip-free.
The advantage of a matte finish on a car is that minor defects are harder to detect on a matte surface. However, when visible scratches and chips appear, they are more difficult to remove than with glossy coatings.
Matte paint can be used to highlight the contours of the car or specific details. Therefore, matte paint can be used not only on the entire body, but also on specific parts.
