Car paint in a spray can for painting car parts
Car paint in spray can format is a simple and cost-effective way to paint car parts yourself. However, to achieve a high-quality result, certain application guidelines must be followed.
Car paint in spray – application steps and rules
Preparing the part to be painted. Before starting work, the surface to be painted must be prepared. Clean it of dirt, dust, grease, and other contaminants. First, remove the dust with a brush or cloth, then wipe the surface with a special solvent for removing grease and oil. The part to be painted must be completely dry.
Primer. The next step is to apply a primer ( zinc primer , epoxy primer for rust protection if the part is not new, or 2K acrylic universal primer ) to ensure good adhesion of the car paint to the surface. If the painted area or part already shows rust damage, the metal surface should be treated with a rust converter to prevent further corrosion under the new paint layer.
The primer should be applied evenly over the entire surface and wait until it dries completely (the drying time is specified by the manufacturer on the packaging). Conveniently, car primers are also available in spray cans, which allow for even distribution over the painted surface.
Painting – Applying the paint from the spray can. Now you can begin painting. Shake the spray can well (1–2 minutes) before use. Spray the paint in thin coats from a distance of approximately 25–35 cm at a right angle to the surface. Allow 10–15 minutes for the paint to dry after each coat.
It's important to paint in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling harmful fumes. Avoid drafts or fans, as these can interfere with the even distribution of the paint from the spray can. Also, wear a respirator and gloves to protect your respiratory system and skin from paint contact.
Drying the painted part. After applying the final coat of paint, the paint should dry for several hours (usually 5–10 hours, according to the packaging). After the car paint has dried (if you used a finish car paint), you can sand and polish the painted surface to improve its appearance. If a base car paint was used, it must still be sealed with car paint. Car paint is also available in aerosol cans.
How to choose car paint in a spray can
If you want to restore and paint a car part yourself, you should follow some general rules:
Primer, spray paint, and car paint should all come from the same manufacturer. Products from different manufacturers can be used, but adhesion may be lower and the paint finish less durable and long-lasting.
Intermediate drying times and the final drying time for the paint and clear coat can vary between different paint manufacturers. Therefore, it is always advisable to read the instructions carefully.
If you want to calculate the consumption of paint and clear coat and know how many spray cans are needed for one part, you can see the consumption standards in the corresponding table – Paint Consumption.
